What is the IABES Conservation and Research grant program?

The International Association of Butterfly Exhibitors & Suppliers (IABES) dedicates a portion of its annual membership dues and operating budget to projects for butterfly conservation and related research which promote the mission of IABES: “Protecting wild butterflies and their habitats by promoting sustainable butterfly exhibits and their suppliers; and supporting conservation, research and (public) education.”

What types of projects/research can be funded?

The IABES Conservation and Research grant program provides support for:

  • Conservation projects contributing directly to the protection of wild butterflies and their habitats, with a focus on countries, regions and local communities involved in butterfly farming.
  • Research and educational activities, including field research projects, publications, or participation in congresses or symposia.

Who is eligible to apply for this grant? Do I need to be a member of IABES?

  • IABES membership is not a requirement for application, though endorsement by one or more IABES members is strongly encouraged.
  • Priority is given to regions that are actively involved in butterfly farming, with the presence of IABES members.

How much money will the grants allocate?

Typical grants range from $500 to $1000 per cycle

Is there a deadline or cycle for application submission?

Applications will be received and reviewed once per year, with applications due April 1st.

How soon after submission will decisions be made?

The IABES Conservation and Research Committee will typically provide a response within 45 days of receipt of proposals.

What expenses are NOT eligible?

  • Undergraduate or graduate enrollment and tuition costs
  • Fines and penalties
  • Direct business expenses of IABES members
  • Any activity not compatible with the IABES Mission

Do you support multi-year grants / project that requires long-term funding?

  • Exceptional projects, up to 3 years in duration, may be supported, with annual renewal contingent on reporting and performance.
  • Applicants may also present new proposals for follow-up to previously funded projects.

Can I apply for grant / subsidy if it is to be used in conjunction with other funding?

Demonstrating a commitment of matching funds to complement IABES support is strongly encouraged

Can I resubmit an improved application if I do not receive the grant/subsidy?

Yes, during the following annual funding cycle.

Will I receive feedback on my application if it is unsuccessful?

The IABES Conservation and Research Grant Committee, depending on the volume of applications received, may not be able to provide detailed feedback on all grant applications.

What are the key obligations if I receive a grant?

  • Submission of a technical report upon finishing of the project, using the assigned format
  • Submission of a financial report upon finishing of the project, using the assigned format
  • Acknowledgement of IABES support in publications.
  • Prior approval for use of IABES logo.
